For a interior project in Haarlem we needed 25 ceiling lights; the balancing item of this home renovating project could use some creative thinking… We invested in sleek aluminum ceiling caps and used secondhand small shades, which resulted in these eyecatching adjustable ceiling lights.

Curatorship and expo design for Read Between the Lines

A collabarate conceptdesign and curatorship for an exposition in gallery and store Blaak10 founded by WDKA. A plan is set out for the students to fill in by just black lines and hanging windows and doors.

/”Wij hebben alleen de contouren aangegeven, de studenten en alumni van de Willem de Kooning Academie mogen die invullen met hun werk”. Vrij in de ruimte geven deuren en ramen de grensen aan van kamers. De zwarte lijnen zijn doorgetrokken op de vloer en vormen zo de plattegrond voor de expositie. Het ontwerpkarakter van de objecten speelt in op de gelijktijdige 100% Designbeurs in de van Nelle fabriek.

Elevated gardens in downtown Hangzhou

This design principle for residential architecture, gives inhabitants the freedom to choose the levels they need to create their personal apartment block. The different blocks together form a lively city block with a peaceful courtyard.
The design for this city block located in downtown Hangzhou, is not afraid of it’s heritage from traditional Chinese architecture. An typical Tulou roof shape is used to direct light flow into the heart of the apartment block and collect rainwater. Around this courtyard two staircases string to two apartments, but for privacy reasons, never meet.
The variety of levels to choose from each bring their own quality. Ground levels can be used for shops, restaurants, cafes, offices or parking. Almost every apartment has a terrace at varying levels. This is an open story which, considering the Chinese predilection for plants, can grow into the elevated gardens of downtown Hangzhou.
The wooden façades originating from the Chinese level-high doors, are modernised into shielding walls, which fold open completely to create more space.

YFU.nl completely restyled. Including the interior, all graphics and product design. The heart of the organization is the large lounge where guests, students and employees meet, have lunch and give presentations. A non profit organization for international student exchange with a professional look.
/ YFU Benelux wordt YFU Nederland; een jongeren organisatie. Restyling van huisstijl, kleding, communicatiemateriaal en het kantoorpand. Bij het nieuwe interieur komt de gast binnen in wat eruitziet als een bruin café, deze ruimte wordt gebruikt als presentatie-, vergaderruimte en lunchroom. Daarnaast is een ruimte waar open en gesloten werkplekken zijn gecreëerd voor het personeel, met boven de werktafels een zelf ontworpen beeldschermdrager voor meer aflegruimte. Eyecatchers zijn de foto’s van de jongeren op de muur die in het grafisch materiaal terugkomen.

So the offspring of our Greenhouse, is for growing herbs at your countertop. This item proves there is a way to have honeycomb being sealed at one end, but not lose its flexible quality.

Flexible furniture is originally designed for refugees. The honeycomb structure is compact for transport but once filled with local raw material, like sand, a solid piece of funiture. In the long run we aim for refugees to produce the furniture locally, and set up their own microbusiness with Displaced Furniture.

No more rain down the drain

Nominated for Trespa Architects Challenge 2010.

A new exterior cladding panel which will not only protect buildings from rainwater but will also retain it. This slightly bowl-shaped panel made from Trespa, harvests rainwater and funnels it into tanks for internal storage. The water is then used for the building’s heating, cooling and sanitary installations. The scale-like surface and pearly colours give the panels their nickname ‘Hollandse Nieuwe’, referring to Dutch fresh herring.

// Een geveltegel die opgewassen is tegen de klimaatveranderingen van de de toekomst. Deze tegel vangt regenwater en slaat het op in tanks. Zo wordt regenwater gerecupereerd voor het sanitair- en klimaatsysteem van grote gebouwen.

A lightweight, yet windproof seat when filled with sand

// Een eenpersoonszit gemaakt van textielcoupons volgens het honingraat- (of eigenlijk zandraat-) principe. Het zand waarmee de zitting gevuld is zorgt ervoor dat het een weer- en windbestendig meubel is. Ongevuld is het een klein pakketje.

Greenhouse

A lightweight greenhouse for (semi)arid areas. The vertical structure maximises the use of soil, protects the crop against direct sunlight and wind, while it enhances and collects condensation at night. Greenhouse and pots are one and can be reused.
// Herbruikbare groenkas volgens het honingraatprincipe, opvouwbaar en lichtgewicht. Een idee voor het kweken van kruiden en groenten in een warm en droog klimaat. De verticale ‘raten’ verdelen de vruchtbare aarde vertikaal in plaats van horizontaal en beschermen de plant tegen direct zonlicht en/of droge wind. De groenkas is ‘s nachts af te dekken om afkoelingscondens op te vangen.

A beach mattress that fits in your pocket. Pull out, fill the honeycombs with sand and you’ll lay elevated from the blowing sand. (It’s a prototype:)

// Prototype van een Sandcomb Matras volgens het honingraatprincipe. Het kleine lichtgewicht pakketje laat zich makkelijk uitvouwen tot een honingraatmatras. Gevuld met zand vormt het een stevig bed waarin elke ‘raat’ eigen ondersteuning geeft. Het nylon materiaal, afkomstig uit de parachute-industrie, is niet alleen lichtgewicht en makkelijk opvouwbaar, maar ook waterafstotend. Deze Sandcomb Matras is vervaardigd uit restafval van een parachutefabriek.
